Papilio polyxenes

Common name: Black Swallowtail

Appearance:

  • Mostly black wings with orange dot
  • Males have yellow band down the side of wings
  • Females have iridescent blue band on hindwing
  • 3-4 inch wingspan

Found: Open fields, suburbs, marshes, roadside

Major foodplant: Parsley, fennel, carrot, and other umbellifera

Adults are active in: April - September
